ATL80 and ATL160 from Quantum Design

The Advanced Technology Liquefiers (ATLs) are a cryo-cooler based helium liquefier. The ATLs are lab-scale and mobile devices that allow you to recover and liquefy the helium gas currently being lost from the normal boil off and helium transfers of you cryogenic instruments.

The ATL uses a Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryo-cooler to liquefy helium gas. The GM cryo-cooler has a closed helium gas loop that is pressurized by a compressor. The compressed helium gas is then expanded in the cold head of the liquefier which generates low temperatures that cool down the dewar and the helium gas inside.

The helium liquefier has no sophisticated installation requirements and can easily be operated in any laboratory. A touch-screen panel allows easy control of the automated system. The ATL can use both helium gas from a high-pressure cylinder and recycled gas from a cryogenic experiment.

Thanks to the liquefier’s outstanding design, the helium is automatically liquefied with very high efficiency. The systems feature an average rate of 12 L/d (ATL80) and 22 L/d (ATL-160) respectively. Depending on the mode of operation, these rates can even be higher.

As an ATL unit can simply be rolled to the cryogenic experiment, the liquid helium can be directly transferred. This saves time and reduces helium losses.

Recovery of liquid helium

Currently, our ATLs are already successfully used for the recovery of liquid helium in magnetism and cryotechnology with Quantum Design products like the MPMS and PPMS, with Magnetoencephalography (MEG) systems by Elekta and with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) systems by various suppliers. Other equipment that runs with the liquid helium from our ATLs are bath and flow cryostats of any kind for measurement methods like Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), Fourier Transform Mass Spectroscopy (FT-MS) , Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (EPR), Cathodoluminescence, Mossbauer Spectroscopy, IR Detectors und Electron Beam Ion Traps (EBIT).

The ATLs can be installed without any additional helium storage ability, the so called direct recovery system and with additional high pressure storage equipment, the so called high pressure recovery systems (please find further information in the brochure under downloads).

"The Low Temperature Laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences provides liquid helium for research work since 1973. A country-wide liquid helium delivery service was established in cooperation with Linde Magyarország Zrt. (local branch of Linde AG) for ’small costumers’ e.g. NMR spectrometers. To keep the supply safety we exchanged our former soviet-made helium liquifier (running since 1986) for an ATL-160. It was commissioned in January 2014. The helium gas collection and handling system was kept. A homemade helium gas purifier was constructed to provide the suitable gas purity for ATL."
